Mahaprabhu Jagannath, the first animated feature film from Odisha based on Lord Jagannath, was made on a budget of around Rs 6 crore. The film released in theatres on September 4, 2026, across India in Odia, Hindi and Telugu languages. It failed to draw audiences and was declared a box office bomb in its opening week.

The film was produced by Durga Prasad Dalai under the banner of Ele Animations Pvt Ltd, headquartered in Bhubaneswar. Directed by Shripad Warkhedkar, the animated mythological film had a runtime of 1 hour and 44 minutes and received a U certification from the Central Board of Film Certification.

Producer Durga Prasad Dalai confirmed the budget in an interview with ETV Bharat ahead of the release. He said the film would release on around 300 screens with 700 shows across the country. In Odisha, it was scheduled to screen in 30 theatres with 60 shows.

The film was originally set to release on July 17, 2026, a day after the sacred Rath Yatra. However, its release was delayed after objections were raised over the depiction of Lord Jagannath in animated form. Religious groups and trustees of the Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri raised concerns that the portrayal did not match religious beliefs.

The matter reached the Odisha High Court, which initially banned the screening. The producers then appealed to the Supreme Court. On July 29, 2026, the Supreme Court dismissed the Odisha government’s plea to stop the release and permitted the film to be exhibited after the completion of the Rath Yatra.

The Supreme Court bench observed that animation is for the purpose of children and that such matters should not come in the way of art. Following the court’s decision, the film was rescheduled for release on September 4, 2026, coinciding with Janmashtami.

Despite the legal clearance and a festive release window, the film opened to very poor numbers at the box office. According to box office reports, the film earned only about Rs 2 lakh on its opening day. This was just 1.4 percent of the opening day collection of the previous mythological animation film Mahavatar Narsimha.

Trade reports described the film’s performance as a crash and a harsh reminder of the challenges animation films face at the Indian box office. The film was declared a disaster in its first week across all regions by film trade sources.

Producer Durga Prasad Dalai had expressed uncertainty about the film’s box office prospects before the release. He said the delays made it difficult to know how much support the audience would give. He hoped people would come to theatres and support the film.
