Filmmaker Abhishek Singh directed the mythological drama Mahakavya Shri Ramayan Katha, which was released in cinemas across India on September 25, 2026. The film was shot simultaneously in Hindi and Chhattisgarhi and stars Dev Sharma as Lord Ram, Anjali Arora as Mata Sita, and Rajniesh Duggall as Ravan.

The film marked Singh’s second feature directorial venture after the 2022 film Unwoven Threads of Kashi. Before entering cinema, Singh served as an IAS officer and became the first Indian bureaucrat to walk the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025 for his debut film 1946: Direct Action Day.

A Katha-Centred Approach

Singh said the film prioritised the emotional and devotional quality of the Ramayan over large-scale spectacle. He described the film’s guiding thought as Katha Bhav, the feeling with which the epic has been heard and shared across generations.

Director Abhishek Singh said, ‘Every filmmaker will have a different way of approaching the Ramayan. For us, the first question was what feeling we wanted the audience to carry with them. We kept returning to the Katha Bhav, the Prem between Shri Ram and Mata Sita, Hanuman ji’s Bhakti, Lakshman’s Kartavya and the Maryada with which Shri Ram faces every circumstance. That bhav had to remain at the centre of our telling.’

The film was produced by Prakash Mahobiya and Sanjay Bundela under the Mahobiya Films banner. Honey Kuldeep Agarwal and Monika Sen served as co-producers. The trailer was launched on September 17, 2026, and presented the central conflict through the line, ‘Adharm Ke Saamne Dharm Ka Naam, Shri Ram.’

Cast And Production Details

The ensemble cast included Sheel Verma as Lakshman and Nirbhay Wadhwa as Hanuman. The film’s runtime was 2 hours and 54 minutes and received a UA certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification.

The music featured vocals from Kailash Kher, Javed Ali, Farhad Bhiwandiwala, Anurag Sharma, and Sunil Soni. The songs were recorded in both Hindi and Chhattisgarhi rather than being dubbed from one language into the other. Cinematography was handled by Kunal V. Kadam and Ravi Parcha.
