Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan have reunited on the big screen after 18 years in the crime thriller Haiwaan, directed by Priyadarshan. The film released in theatres worldwide on September 11, 2026.

Haiwaan is a Hindi remake of the 2016 Malayalam film Oppam, which was also directed by Priyadarshan and starred Mohanlal in the lead role. The original film was a crime thriller about a visually impaired man who protects a young girl from a vengeful killer.

Plot and Characters

Saif Ali Khan plays Shyam Rane, a blind man who works multiple jobs, including as a security manager and assistant to a retired judge. Akshay Kumar plays Parshuram, a man who was wrongfully convicted of rape and murder by the judge and seeks revenge after his release from prison.

The story follows Shyam as he becomes the protector of the judge’s secret daughter, Nandini, after the judge is murdered by Parshuram. The film turns into a cat-and-mouse game between the blind protector and the ruthless killer.

The supporting cast includes Boman Irani, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Saiyami Kher, Sharib Hashmi, Rajpal Yadav, and Rajesh Sharma. Mohanlal, the star of the original Malayalam film, makes a cameo appearance in the Hindi version. The film also marks late actor Asrani’s final posthumous screen appearance.

Production and Casting

Priyadarshan revealed that Akshay Kumar was not part of the original plan for Haiwaan. In an interview with IANS, the director said, ‘In this film, Saif is the only actor I had confirmed. I tried to get the antagonist with many people, and I failed.’

Priyadarshan recalled that during the shoot of Bhoot Bangla, he casually mentioned the role to Akshay Kumar. ‘He immediately said, I will do it.’ The director added, ‘He said that he always wanted to play a psycho character, and that’s how it happened.’

The film reunites Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan after several successful collaborations, including Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhag, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and De Dana Dan. Haiwaan is produced by Venkat K Narayana and Shailaja Desai under KVN Productions and Thespian Films.

Release and Certification

Haiwaan received a U/A 16+ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification ahead of its release. The film has a runtime of 2 hours and 44 minutes. It was released in cinemas worldwide on September 11, 2026, with music on Zee Music Company.

The film’s title track, titled Main Toh Nahi Haiwaan, was released on September 7, 2026. The song features Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Shriya Pilgaonkar, and Saiyami Kher.
