Prime Video released the coming-of-age romantic comedy ‘Don’t Be Shy’ worldwide on September 25, 2026. Produced by Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt under Eternal Sunshine Productions, the film introduces four newcomers in lead roles and marks the directorial debut of Sreeti Mukerji.
The film streams in Hindi with English subtitles across India and more than 240 countries and territories. It is Alia Bhatt’s fourth production venture after ‘Darlings’ (2022), ‘Poacher’ (2024), and ‘Jigra’ (2024).
Cast and Characters
Aarushi Bajaj leads the cast as Shyamili ‘Shy’ Das, a 20-year-old college student who believes she has her entire life planned out. Piyush Khati plays Mayank Jhunjhunwalla, her wealthy boyfriend. Ansh Duggal portrays Dhruv, her childhood friend, and Bianca Arora appears as Tara, Mayank’s new girlfriend.
The supporting cast includes Kunaal Roy Kapur, Anurag Basu, Neha Dhupia, and Anju Alva Naik in pivotal roles. Alia Bhatt makes an uncredited appearance in the film and also features in the promotional song ‘Re Bawri’.
Plot and Themes
Shy Das is a quintessential mean girl who finds herself relegated to ‘Loser-ville’ when Mayank, her boyfriend of three years, suddenly dumps her. She plans revenge but instead finds herself developing an unexpected friendship with Mayank’s new girlfriend, Tara.
The story follows Shy as she navigates first love, heartbreak, friendship, and the pressure to maintain a perfect image. Set in the early 2000s, the film explores themes of self-discovery, body image, ambition, and the messy journey of growing up.
The official logline states: ‘Don’t Be Shy follows the story of Shyamili Shy Das, a 20-year-old girl who thinks she has everything figured out until her perfectly planned life takes an unpredictable turn, and things begin to spiral out of her control.’
Production Details
Sreeti Mukerji wrote and directed the film, with Sehaj Kaur Maini credited as co-writer. Grishma Shah and Vikesh Bhutani served as co-producers. Ram Sampath composed the music, with songs including ‘Jhoomo’ sung by Jonita Gandhi and Saahel, ‘Tere Sang’ by Armaan Malik and Shreya Karmarkar, and ‘Re Bawri’ sung by Sona Mohapatra.
The film has a runtime of 2 hours and 28 minutes.
Trailer and Premiere
Prime Video unveiled the trailer on September 11, 2026. The trailer introduced viewers to Shy’s meticulously planned life, from an internship at Jhunjhunwala’s to an IIM degree, an MBA in finance, and marriage to Mayank. Her plans unravel when Mayank breaks up with her.
A celebrity premiere was held in Mumbai on September 24, 2026. Alia Bhatt attended with her family, including Ranbir Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Mahesh Bhatt, and Soni Razdan. Karan Johar and other industry figures were also present.
Reception and Reviews
Critical reception has been mixed. The Times of India gave the film 3 out of 5 stars, calling it a ‘predictable but pleasant Mean Girl romcom with promising new faces.’ The review noted that Aarushi Bajaj ‘beautifully brings out Shy’s underlying fears, insecurities and hopes.’
NDTV gave the film 2.5 stars, describing it as ‘colourful, occasionally funny and carried by a promising young ensemble, but its predictable storytelling and uneven pacing keep it from becoming the memorable coming-of-age film it clearly wants to be.’
Rediff criticized the film as ‘clichéd,’ stating that ‘despite a low-key charm from the new cast, particularly Aarushi Bajaj, the performances are not enough to elevate the forgettable fluff.’

WION noted that the film ‘isn’t a bad film; it is well-intended and backed by a solid lead cast who know their craft well. Its main flaw is that it plays it too safe and succumbs to predictability.’
Hindustan Times wrote that the film ‘merely pretends to understand how teenagers think, but makes a mess of it all with a boring screenplay.’
Social Media Reactions
Viewer reactions on X (formerly Twitter) have been divided. One user wrote, ‘Don’t Be Shy is such an endearing, heartwarming watch! Aarushi Bajaj completely shines with her infectious screen presence, vulnerability, and effortless comic timing.’
Another user posted, ‘Fresh, fun and ridiculously comforting. Don’t Be Shy feels like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar got a Gen-Z makeover, with college chaos, crushes, friendship, romance and plenty of main-character energy. A warm, easy-breezy comfort watch.’
However, not all reactions were positive. One user rated the film 1.5 out of 5 stars, writing, ‘It’s quite a downfall for Alia Bhatt to produce a film like Don’t Be Shy after Darlings on Netflix. That film was actually about a new phase of feminism, whereas Don’t Be Shy feels more like the unwanted sequels of SOTY2 and Nadaaniyan coming together.’
Director’s Vision
Sreeti Mukerji described the film as a tribute to the movies she grew up watching. She said, ‘Don’t Be Shy came from a place of missing the movies I watched growing up — movies I still return to when I want to feel safe, comforted, and entertained.’
Mukerji added, ‘This is my tribute to that time in our lives, when we’re on the brink of adulthood but still young in so many ways. It’s about that feeling of being reminded that, no matter how weird or wild life gets, we can always find our way back home to ourselves.’
She also spoke about working with the Bhatt sisters, saying, ‘There is no DBS without Alia and Shaheen. I hate to be cheesy, but they’ve been the producers of my dreams.’
Producers’ Statement
Alia and Shaheen Bhatt said in a joint statement: ‘Don’t Be Shy has been extremely special to us from the very beginning, and we couldn’t be prouder to see it come to life. It captures something so honest about being young—the friendships that shape you, the first loves that change you, the heartbreaks that stay with you, and the process of gradually figuring out who you are.’
They added, ‘What excites us most is this brilliant young cast; their energy, vulnerability, and chemistry are magnetic, and they bring such life and honesty to these characters. We can’t wait for audiences in India and around the world to meet Shy and get swept into her wonderful, chaotic world.’
Lead Actress’s Preparation
Aarushi Bajaj, who plays the titular character, said, ‘Stepping into Shy’s shoes pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. Playing the role of Shy also came with a sense of responsibility — I wanted to give her everything I had and do justice to her journey.’
Bajaj has previously appeared in the JioHotstar series ‘Aarya’ and ‘Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders’.
Latest Status
‘Don’t Be Shy’ is currently streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The film is available in Hindi with English subtitles. Alia Bhatt will next appear in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Love & War’ opposite Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, slated for a January 2027 release.
