Brad Pitt’s ‘Heart of the Beast’ Opens Strong at Box Office as Critics Praise Canine Co-Star

Brad Pitt’s new survival thriller ‘Heart of the Beast’ opened in U.S. theaters on September 25, 2026, earning $20 million domestically and $30.1 million from 63 international markets for a worldwide debut of $50.1 million, according to Paramount Pictures and box office reports. The film, directed by David Ayer and written by Cameron Alexander, reunites Pitt with Ayer for the first time since their 2014 World War II drama ‘Fury.’

The R-rated film stars Pitt as James Belmont, a retired U.S. Army Special Forces officer who survives a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness alongside his combat dog, Odin. The dog is portrayed by a six-year-old German Shepherd named Uber, with three of Uber’s sons performing specialized stunts, according to the Motion Picture Association.

Critical Reception and Review Scores

‘Heart of the Beast’ has received largely positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 94% critic score based on 31 reviews, making it David Ayer’s best-reviewed film on the platform. The previous record was held by ‘End of Watch’ at 85%. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 69 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.

Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the film ‘is actually a love story, and one of the most moving to come along in a long time. That it’s a love story between a man and his dog doesn’t at all detract from its emotional impact.’ Owen Gleiberman of Variety praised Pitt’s performance and the dog, writing, ‘This is a terrific performance — and Brad Pitt is extremely good too.’

Lindsey Bahr of the Associated Press offered a more mixed response, describing the film as ‘an effectively thrilling adventure’ while noting that it ‘never strays far from the formula’ and is ‘occasionally implausible.’ Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian felt the film ‘leans heavily into sentimentality’ and described it as ‘a bit cheesy.’

Cast and Production Details

Joining Pitt in the cast are J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe. Simmons appears in a brief but memorable role as a stranger James encounters in the wilderness, while Lambe plays a character who assists James later in the film.

The film was produced by Pitt, Ayer, Marty Bowen, and Olivia Hamilton. Executive producers include Damien Chazelle, Chris Long, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, Andrew Lary, Sophie Cassidy, Zack Conroy, and writer Cameron Alexander. Production companies involved include Wild Chickens Productions, Temple Hill Entertainment, Kino World Productions, Crave Films, and Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.

Principal photography took place in remote areas of New Zealand’s South Island, which doubled for the Alaskan wilderness. According to the Indonesian Film Censorship Institution, some locations were accessible only by helicopter. The film runs 101 minutes and is rated PG-13.

Production Challenges and Creative Differences

David Ayer said the film’s simple premise made production unexpectedly difficult. ‘It was a bigger challenge than I understood going into it. I really didn’t know what I was in for,’ Ayer told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. ‘The simplicity of it exposes the filmmaking in ways I never imagined. Your decisions, tone, mood, and performance count more than ever in that situation. There was nowhere to hide.’

Reports also emerged of a creative clash between Pitt and Ayer over the film’s final cut. According to Puck’s Matthew Belloni, the actor and director prepared separate cuts of the film, with Ayer’s broader version testing better. Paramount studio chiefs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein reportedly stepped in to resolve the conflict, ultimately retaining Ayer’s version with some of Pitt’s suggestions incorporated.

Ayer told Polygon that both he and Pitt ‘were both ready to go on emotionally’ and described the film as ‘a film about endurance.’

Box Office Performance

The film’s $50.1 million worldwide opening weekend exceeded industry projections, which had pointed to a domestic range between $14 million and $20 million. The film landed at No. 3 in North America, beating Robert Pattinson’s ‘Primetime’ for the spot. Its opening Friday brought in $7.4 million domestically.

By Monday, September 28, the film had collected $1.6 million in North America, a decline of nearly 70% from Sunday. It has since crossed $21.6 million domestically and entered David Ayer’s top five highest-grossing films worldwide.

The film was produced on a reported budget of $82 million. It opened alongside 18 other releases on September 25, including ‘The Dog Stars,’ another survival thriller featuring a man and his dog, starring Jacob Elordi. ‘Heart of the Beast’ outperformed ‘The Dog Stars’ at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend.

The Dog Behind Odin

Uber, the German Shepherd who plays Odin, was born to a law enforcement and military breeder in New Zealand. He spent two years at a police academy without completing it and later worked alongside a paramedic on rescue helicopters in Queenstown. Trainer Andrew Simpson said Uber left police work because ‘he was just too nice a dog to be a police dog.’

Simpson auditioned dogs across New Zealand’s North and South Islands before finding Uber living with a family. ‘You only have to do one look at him on screen, and everyone agrees that he’s a potential movie star,’ Simpson said. Ayer credited Uber’s ‘soulful expressions’ and ‘life wisdom.’

A team of 12 supported the animals on set, including four trainers. Makeup artists, prosthetics specialists, and costume designers dressed the dog in a military vest that was progressively damaged during filming. Odin is written as a retired working dog with combat injuries, including titanium teeth and a prosthetic leg.

‘Heart of the Beast’ remains in theaters nationwide. Paramount Pictures has not announced a streaming release date.
