Runner Movie Not a Netflix Film as Theatrical Run Continues

Runner, the action thriller starring Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson, is not a Netflix movie. The film was released in theaters on September 11, 2026, by Angel Studios.

The movie follows Hank Malone, a former soldier working as a high-end courier. He must deliver a donor liver to a dying seven-year-old girl within a tight timeframe while being hunted by a ruthless cartel.

Ritchson plays Malone, and Wilson plays Ben Bishop, his unlikely partner. The cast also includes Rodrigo Santoro, Leila George, Adriana Barraza, and Sullivan Stapleton. Scott Waugh directed the film from a screenplay by Miles Hubley and Tommy White.

Runner is an original theatrical release, not a Netflix original. Angel Studios has not announced a streaming date for the film.

Ritchson previously starred in the Netflix action film War Machine. That movie became one of Netflix’s most-watched films. But Runner was made and distributed by Angel Studios.

The film received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 67% critical approval score based on early reviews. The audience score is 90% based on more than 100 verified ratings.

Audiences gave the film an A- CinemaScore. That is a strong grade for an action film. It matches the CinemaScore for films like Wrath of Man and The Equalizer.

Runner opened in 2,472 theaters domestically. It earned $6.4 million in its opening weekend. The film has grossed $11.9 million domestically and $1.2 million internationally. Its worldwide total stands at $13.1 million.

The reported production budget was between $35 million and $45 million. The film faces a steep climb to break even at the box office.

Critics praised the chemistry between Ritchson and Wilson. The Hollywood Reporter said the two display a winning chemistry. Variety called the film a good-enough action thriller with an efficient 98-minute runtime.

Angel Studios has not confirmed a digital release date. Based on the studio’s past releases, the film could become available for digital rental or purchase in late September or early October 2026. No subscription streaming platform has been announced.
