Resident Evil Film Franchise Reaches 13 Titles With 2026 Reboot

The Resident Evil film franchise now includes 13 total movies released since 2002, according to Media Play News. That count comprises eight live-action films and five animated or CGI features.

The series has generated more than $1.27 billion collectively across its various timelines and universes. The latest entry, a reboot directed by Zach Cregger, has pushed the franchise past a new box office milestone.

Live-Action Series

The live-action side of the franchise began in 2002 with Resident Evil, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich as Alice. Five sequels followed: Apocalypse (2004), Extinction (2007), Afterlife (2010), Retribution (2012), and The Final Chapter (2016).

The first six films formed a single timeline centered on Jovovich’s character. Anderson directed four of the six entries, with Alexander Witt and Russell Mulcahy directing the other two.

A reboot titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was released in 2021, directed by Johannes Roberts. The film was a commercial and critical failure, earning $17 million domestically against a $25 million budget.

The eighth live-action film, also titled Resident Evil, was released on September 18, 2026. Directed by Zach Cregger, it stars Austin Abrams as a medical courier caught in a zombie outbreak.

Animated Films

The animated Resident Evil films exist as a separate track from the live-action series. The first animated entry was Biohazard 4D-Executer, a 19-minute short released in 2000 as a Japanese theme park attraction.

Biohazard 4: Incubate followed in 2006 as a compilation of cutscenes and gameplay from the Resident Evil 4 video game. The first full-length CGI feature, Resident Evil: Degeneration, arrived in 2008.

Subsequent animated features include Damnation (2012), Vendetta (2017), and Death Island (2023). A 2021 animated miniseries titled Infinite Darkness was released on Netflix but is not counted among the feature films by all sources.

The animated films are generally considered canon to the video game storyline and often center on characters such as Leon S. Kennedy.

2026 Reboot Performance

The 2026 Resident Evil reboot opened to $60 million domestically from 3,684 locations, the biggest opening weekend in franchise history. It also earned $48.3 million internationally for a global debut of $108.3 million.

Two weeks after release, the film crossed $200 million worldwide, with $105.3 million domestic and $100 million international. It became the fastest title in franchise history to reach that milestone.

The movie has now grossed over $245 million worldwide and is projected to finish between $320 million and $340 million. The highest-grossing film in the franchise remains The Final Chapter at $312.2 million globally.

Critical Reception

Most films in the franchise have received generally negative reviews from critics. The 2021 reboot Welcome to Raccoon City holds a 60 percent review score on Moviefone and a 59 percent audience score.

The 2026 reboot directed by Zach Cregger has received widespread critical acclaim, according to Wikipedia’s summary of the franchise. The film has been described as a reinvention of the series with a darker tone than previous installments.

The franchise retains the record for the most live-action film adaptations of a video game. It was once the highest-grossing film series based on a video game and remains the highest-grossing zombie film series.

Current Status

The 2026 reboot is currently in theaters and continues to add to its global box office total. Sony Pictures has not announced plans for a sequel to Cregger’s film.
