Saiyaara Meaning in Bengali: A Wandering Star That Lights Up the World

The Urdu-Arabic word ‘saiyaara’ has become a subject of widespread discussion in Bengali-speaking regions following the release of the 2025 Hindi film of the same name. In Bengali, the word is most accurately translated as a moving star or planet, though its poetic meaning carries deeper connotations of solitude and quiet sacrifice.

The word ‘saiyaara’ is derived from Arabic and Urdu roots. In Arabic, it refers to a celestial body in continuous motion or rotation. In Urdu, it denotes a star or planet that travels across the sky, solitary yet radiant, illuminating the world around it.

Bengali Translations of Saiyaara

Bengali-language sources explain the term in several ways. One Bengali report states that ‘saiyaara’ does not mean ‘beloved’ or ‘priyatama,’ a common misconception. It is an Urdu and Arabic word meaning a star or planet that constantly revolves.

Another Bengali source describes it as a ‘shant othoch ujjwal nakshatra’ — a quiet but bright star that moves alone in its own orbit while illuminating the entire world with its light.

A Bengali review of the film explains that ‘saiyaara’ represents the story of a lonely star among many stars, one that sacrifices itself to bring light to others’ lives.

The Film That Sparked the Search

The 2025 film ‘Saiyaara,’ directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Yash Raj Films, stars debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. The film is a musical romantic drama loosely based on the 2004 South Korean film ‘A Moment to Remember.’

The film’s title track made history as the first Bollywood song to enter Spotify’s Top 50 Global chart, where it held the number one position.

Director Mohit Suri explained the meaning behind the word in a video shared by YRF. ‘Saiyaara actually means a heavenly body that travels lonely in the sky,’ Suri said. ‘A star is always looked upon as someone who is shining bright, but you know somewhere down the line they are burning themselves up to light up your night.’

The film’s official trailer described it as follows: ‘Saiyaara means a lonely star among the stars. Who by herself illuminates the whole world, you are my Saiyaara.’

Earlier Use in Bollywood

The word ‘saiyaara’ was previously used in the 2012 film ‘Ek Tha Tiger.’ Lyricist Kausar Munir, who wrote the song ‘Saiyaara’ for that film, explained her approach. ‘I clubbed the words saiya and yaara which means lover and friend and created Saiyaara,’ Munir said. ‘But this word already exists in Arabic to describe a planet.’

Munir also noted that the term means ‘lonely planet,’ which she felt was an apt description for actor Salman Khan, who has been publicly single for a long time.

Audience Reactions and Box Office

The 2025 film triggered intense emotional responses from audiences across India. Social media was flooded with videos of viewers crying uncontrollably, fainting in theatres, and even arriving with IV drips.

Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani denied claims that these reactions were a marketing gimmick. ‘None of those people were planted in theatres,’ Widhani said. ‘Whether it’s the person on a drip, the one yelling at the screen, or the guy who took off his shirt and danced – these are genuine fans reacting with real emotions.’

The film collected Rs 21.25 crore on its opening day at the domestic box office. By its fourth day, it had crossed the Rs 100 crore mark, surpassing its reported budget of Rs 45 crore.

According to industry data-tracking platform Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 329.20 crore nett in India during its theatrical run. Production banner YRF reported that ‘Saiyaara’ had collected Rs 376 crore gross at the domestic box office.
