Mahaprabhu Jagannath, Odisha’s first animated feature film, will release in theatres across India on September 4, 2026, coinciding with Janmashtami. The film, produced by Ele Animations, had its release delayed multiple times following objections from religious groups and a subsequent legal battle that reached the Supreme Court.
The animated feature was originally scheduled for a July 17, 2026 release. Just before its premiere, the Orissa High Court issued an interim stay on the national release following a public interest litigation that sought judicial review of the film’s content. The petitioners claimed the film depicted fictional episodes inconsistent with sacred Puranas.
Supreme Court Clears Release
The Supreme Court on July 17, 2026, permitted the exhibition of the film but ordered that it could only be released after the completion of the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra on July 27, 2026. A bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and R. Mahadevan dismissed the Odisha government’s plea to halt the release, stating the court cannot sit in judgment over art.
‘Devotion is something internal for everyone. Can an animated film bring down devotion? How can fiction be in accordance with the Skanda Purana and the Brahma Purana… It is only imagination at work,’ Justice B.V. Nagarathna said during the hearing.
The court’s decision followed an appeal by the film’s makers, Ele Animations, against the Orissa High Court ban. The film had already received a U certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification in Hindi, Odia, and Telugu.
Release Date Shifts
After the Supreme Court’s initial order, the film was rescheduled for an August 28, 2026 release, aligning with Raksha Bandhan and Balaram Jayanti. Producer Durga Prasad Dalai expressed gratitude for the court’s decision at the time.
‘We created Mahaprabhu Jagannath with utmost devotion, love, and respect for our culture. We are immensely grateful to the Supreme Court for upholding artistic freedom while honoring faith,’ Dalai said in a statement.

The film was ultimately locked for a September 4 release, which coincided with Janmashtami. Dalai said the timing felt like a divine decision. ‘We have waited for this moment with a lot of faith. There were many points in this journey where we could only surrender and trust that Mahaprabhu would decide when the film should reach people. And today, when we see that it is coming to theatres on Janmashtami, it genuinely feels like his decision,’ he said.
