Mahaprabhu Jagannath Box Office Animated Film Opens to 2 Lakh After Delayed Release

The animated film Mahaprabhu Jagannath collected only 2 lakh rupees on its opening day in India. The film, based on Lord Jagannath, was released on September 4, 2026, after multiple delays and a legal battle. It failed to generate theatrical momentum despite arriving during a major festival period.

The film was produced by Durga Prasad Dalai under Ele Animations Pvt. Ltd. on a budget of around 6 crore rupees. It was released in Odia, Hindi, and Telugu across approximately 300 screens with 700 shows. In Odisha, it screened in 30 theatres with 60 shows.

Release Delayed by Legal Challenges

Mahaprabhu Jagannath was originally scheduled for release on July 17, 2026, a day after the Jagannath Rath Yatra. Just before its premiere, the Orissa High Court issued an interim stay following a public interest litigation. The PIL objected to the film’s depiction of Lord Jagannath’s childhood, dialogues, and battle sequences, saying they contradicted the Skanda Purana and Brahma Purana.

The filmmakers appealed to the Supreme Court. On July 17, 2026, a Division Bench led by Justice B.V. Nagarathna permitted the film’s exhibition but only after the completion of the Rath Yatra on July 27. The court directed that the film could be released on or after July 28.

Justice Nagarathna said, ‘Devotion is something internal for everyone. Can an animated film bring down devotion? How can fiction be in accordance with the Skanda Purana and the Brahma Purana… It is only imagination at work.’

The film was then scheduled for August 28, 2026, but was pushed again. It finally released on September 4, 2026, coinciding with Janmashtami.

Box Office Performance

On its opening day, Friday, September 4, Mahaprabhu Jagannath earned only 2 lakh rupees at the box office. By comparison, the previous major mythological animation film Mahavatar Narsimha opened to 1.4 crore rupees on its first day. Mahaprabhu Jagannath earned only 1.4 percent of that figure.

Trade reports confirmed that the film bombed in its first week across all circuits. The film faced competition from other releases and could not attract audiences despite positive word-of-mouth from some reviewers. Critics gave the film mixed ratings, praising its devotional themes and voice performances while noting uneven animation quality.

Producer’s Expectations

Ahead of the release, producer Durga Prasad Dalai spoke about the challenges faced by the team. He said, ‘We cannot say anything about that right now. The film’s release was delayed, so it is difficult to know how much support we will get from the audience. Still, we hope people will come to theatres, watch the film and support us. We hope the film will touch their hearts.’

Dalai also noted that small films should be given a chance, pointing to the example of another animation film that initially performed poorly but gained momentum later. He expressed hope that strong word-of-mouth would help Mahaprabhu Jagannath find an audience in its second week.

As of September 12, 2026, the film’s theatrical run has been declared a failure by trade sources. The total collection remained negligible, and the film was pulled from most theatres after its first week.
