The decline continued in the second week. On Day 9, the film collected Rs 1.15 crore across 3,247 shows. By Day 10, the India net total reached Rs 36.80 crore. The overseas gross after ten days was Rs 8.85 crore, taking the worldwide gross to Rs 52.52 crore.

Clash With Awarapan 2

Batwara 1947 was released alongside Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2, which emerged as the clear winner of the box office clash. In its first ten days, Awarapan 2 collected Rs 136 crore net in India and grossed Rs 190 crore worldwide.

Director Rajkumar Santoshi addressed the clash in an interview with Moneycontrol. He said, ‘Main mubarak bad doonga (I would congratulate them), I will say it again. Awarapan 2 has been liked, appreciated by the people and it is an excellent business. I really congratulate Emraan Hashmi, Mukesh Bhatt sahab, Vishesh Bhatt and his son. I congratulate the entire team of Awarapan 2.’

Batwara 1947 is based on Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. The film marked the reunion of Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi after nearly three decades. The duo had previously collaborated on Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993), and Ghatak (1996).

Critical Reception

Batwara 1947 received mixed reviews from critics. Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV wrote, ‘Shabana Azmi delivers an absolute tour de force. She does in Batwara 1947 what Naseeruddin Shah did in Main Vaapas Aaunga. She lends it the sort of depth and gravitas that instantly elevate the entire enterprise.’

Mid-Day’s review noted that the film ‘feels too faithful to its source play, lacks cinematic freshness and struggles with genre inconsistency.’ Deccan Herald observed that the film ‘packs enough melodrama and action for Sunny Deol to flex his dhai kilo ka haath, but this formula proves to be its weakness.’

Cast Reactions

Shabana Azmi expressed surprise at the film’s poor box office performance. She told Zoom, ‘I am very surprised at the total box office disaster Batwara 1947 has been. I am surrounded by people who come and tell me that they loved the film and they loved the message.’

Azmi also questioned viewers’ reluctance to accept Sunny Deol in a Muslim role. She said, ‘Matlab Sunny Deol ko aap Musalman kyun nahi dekh sakte? Coolie jaise filmein thi jismein Amitabh Bachchan bade aaram se Muslim characters karte the. 786 laga lete the aur usko bilkul accept kiya jata hai.’

Preity Zinta, making her comeback to Bollywood after an eight-year hiatus, also addressed the film’s failure. She told Mid-Day, ‘I am very proud of this film and the experience was wonderful. As an artist, I always try to live up to expectations. When I work, I give my 100 percent.’

Box Office Verdict

According to Koimoi, the film secured a flop verdict at the Indian box office. Against a reported budget of Rs 120 crore, it earned only Rs 36.7 crore net, recovering just 31 percent of its budget. The reported deficit was Rs 83.3 crore, or 69 percent.

Wikipedia lists the budget at Rs 150 crore and the box office at Rs 49.24 crore. Pinkvilla reported that the film’s full run in India fetched around Rs 38.50 crore (Rs 32 crore nett), with USD 600K (Rs 5.75 crore) from international markets, for a worldwide gross of Rs 44.25 crore.

Despite the theatrical underperformance, the film became one of Sunny Deol’s top grossers of all time. It was his first major box office disaster after the success of Gadar 2 in 2023.

The film is expected to make its digital debut on an OTT platform in late September or October 2026. No official announcement has been made regarding the streaming platform or exact release date.
