Batwara 1947 Arrives in Theaters on August 14, 2026

The Partition-era drama Batwara 1947, starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, was released in theaters worldwide on August 14, 2026. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, the film was formerly titled Lahore 1947.

The trailer of the film was unveiled on July 28, 2026. The film also stars Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, and Abhimanyu Singh in key roles.

Trailer and Story Details

The trailer shows Sunny Deol’s character celebrating India’s Independence with his family before their lives are disrupted by the violence and migration of Partition. After moving to Lahore, the family is allotted a house where an elderly Hindu woman, played by Shabana Azmi, still lives and refuses to leave.

Despite initial reluctance, the family lets her stay, and a bond develops. The woman later becomes a target of communal harassment, prompting Deol’s character to protect her. The trailer includes the line, ‘No religion is bad. Only people are good or bad.’

Production and CBFC Clearance

Batwara 1947 is adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. The film features music composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics written by Javed Akhtar. The title was changed from Lahore 1947 to Batwara 1947 on June 9, 2026.

The Central Board of Film Certification cleared the film without any cuts and gave it an Adults Only (A) certificate on July 23, 2026. The runtime is 145.34 minutes, approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes.

Box Office Performance

The film opened with Rs 5.75 crore on its first day in India. It earned Rs 13.50 crore on day two and Rs 7.25 crore on day three. By day nine, the total India net collection reached Rs 35.50 crore, with a worldwide gross of Rs 51.12 crore.

The film’s final worldwide box office collection was Rs 53.01 crore gross. Against a reported budget of Rs 120 crore, it recovered only 31% of its cost. The film clashed with Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 at the box office.

Director Responds to Criticism

The film faced criticism from some audiences who labeled it pro-Muslim and pro-Pakistan. Director Rajkumar Santoshi responded to the backlash, saying, ‘I have never made a propaganda film, nor will I ever do so in the future.’

Santoshi added, ‘I believe that humanity stands above all religions.’ He also said, ‘I’m pro-India and pro-humanity.’ According to Santoshi, the film had earned Rs 47 crore gross in the seven days since its release.

Sunny Deol also addressed the film’s approach. He said, ‘It is not like we are trying to neutralise it. It is how the characters are written.’

OTT Release Status

There is no official announcement regarding the OTT release date or the streaming platform for Batwara 1947. Based on the typical timeline for major Hindi films, the digital premiere could occur between late September and October 2026.

A report claimed that an OTT platform offered more than Rs 60 crore for the digital rights when the film was still titled Lahore 1947. No deal was confirmed before the theatrical release.
