Rajkumar Santoshi’s Partition drama Batwara 1947 has concluded its theatrical run as a major box office failure. The film, starring Sunny Deol and produced by Aamir Khan, was released on August 14, 2026, and ended its run with a worldwide gross of approximately 53 crore rupees.
The film was made on a reported budget of 120 crore rupees. It recovered only 36.7 crore rupees net in India, which is 31 percent of its budget, resulting in a deficit of 83.3 crore rupees or 69 percent.
Release and Clash
Batwara 1947 was released on August 14, 2026, during the Independence Day weekend. It clashed with Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2, which released on the same day.
Awarapan 2 emerged as the clear winner of the clash. It collected 136 crore rupees net in India and grossed 190 crore rupees worldwide in its first ten days.
Batwara 1947 opened with 5.75 crore rupees on its first day. The film saw a jump on its second day, collecting 13.50 crore rupees, before dropping sharply in the following days.
Box Office Breakdown
The film’s India net collection was 36.7 crore rupees. Its India gross was 43.31 crore rupees. The overseas gross was 9.7 crore rupees. The worldwide gross was 53.01 crore rupees.
The film had a decent opening weekend but failed to sustain momentum. By its tenth day, it had collected only 1.30 crore rupees net in India. The film was declared a flop by trade analysts.
Koimoi reported that the film suffered a massive deficit of 69 percent against its budget. The film is one of the biggest flops of 2026.
Critical Reception
The film received mixed reviews from critics. Some praised its timely message about humanity and the performances of Sunny Deol and Shabana Azmi. Others criticized its outdated style and melodramatic storytelling.
Deccan Herald wrote that the film had a timely message but was told through an outdated cinematic vocabulary. The Times of India noted that the film’s uneven treatment and overstretched narrative diluted the impact of its powerful message.
The film is based on Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. It is set in Lahore during the Partition of British India and follows a Muslim refugee family allotted a haveli whose Hindu owner still lives there.

Cast and Crew Reactions
Shabana Azmi expressed surprise at the film’s box office failure. In an interview with Zoom, she said, ‘I am very surprised at the total box office disaster Batwara 1947 has been.’ She questioned why audiences found it difficult to accept Sunny Deol as a Muslim character.
She said, ‘The thing is that you cannot accept Sunny Deol as a Muslim. In Coolie and in many other films, Amitabh Bachchan very comfortably played Muslim characters.’
Preity Zinta, who returned to the screen after an eight-year hiatus with this film, also reacted to its performance. She told Mid-Day, ‘First of all, I am very proud of the film, and it’s a very overwhelming experience. As an actor, I am always managing expectations. Once I am working, I put in my 100 per cent.’
She added, ‘You do your karam and then leave the rest to god. You can’t control what happens.’
Sunny Deol, in a statement, said, ‘There is no point in discussing this. All I can say is, I am very proud of Batwara, and always will be. The box office doesn’t decide the quality of a film.’
OTT Release Status
No OTT deal was struck before the film’s release. A leading platform had offered 125 crore rupees for the rights, but the deal was not accepted.
Given the film’s box office disaster, no OTT platform is currently willing to acquire it. The makers have not announced an official OTT release date or platform.
Based on typical patterns for Bollywood releases, the film may reach a streaming service in late September or October 2026. However, no official confirmation has been made.
The film’s theatrical run has concluded. It will be remembered as a major box office disappointment despite its ensemble cast and significant production budget.
