Heart of the Beast Theatrical Run Continues as Streaming Date Remains Unannounced

Brad Pitt’s survival thriller Heart of the Beast remains exclusively in movie theaters nearly two weeks after its September 25, 2026, domestic release. Paramount Pictures has not announced a digital or streaming date for the David Ayer-directed film, which means audiences hoping to watch at home must wait.

The movie opened in U.S. theaters on Friday, September 25, following a September 23 international rollout in some markets. It stars Pitt as James Belmont, a former Army Special Forces soldier stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with his retired combat dog Odin after a plane crash. J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe also star.

Theatrical Release Still the Only Option

Heart of the Beast is currently playing only in cinemas. Ticketing services such as Fandango list showtimes across the United States. The film carries a PG-13 rating and a runtime of 1 hour and 41 minutes.

Decider reported on September 24 that the film ‘will only be available to watch in a movie theater’ upon its U.S. opening. The article noted that the movie is ‘not yet available to watch online or on streaming.’

Paramount has not issued any official announcement about a premium video-on-demand or subscription streaming premiere date.

Paramount+ Likely Destination, but Timing Is Uncertain

Because Heart of the Beast is a Paramount Pictures release, its first streaming home is expected to be Paramount+. Several outlets have projected a late-2026 arrival, but no date has been confirmed by the studio.

NewsBreak reported on September 16 that the film ‘will likely stream on Paramount+ in late December 2026 or early January 2027.’ A separate NewsBreak article on September 24 stated that the movie ‘could begin streaming on Paramount+ by the end of December 2026,’ adding that this is ‘a tentative timeframe rather than an announced streaming date.’

MovieWeb suggested on September 26 that a mid-to-late November 2026 Paramount+ debut was possible, pointing to Paramount’s pattern of releasing films to streaming on Tuesdays. The outlet floated Tuesday, November 24, 2026, as a potential date but cautioned that nothing had been finalized.

Decider noted that the film ‘is not streaming on Netflix or Prime Video, and likely will not be on Netflix any time soon’ due to its Paramount distribution. The article added that viewers will eventually be able to purchase the movie on Prime Video, but not stream it free with a Prime subscription.

Box Office and Critical Reception

Heart of the Beast opened to $20 million domestically and $30.1 million from 63 international markets for a $50.1 million worldwide start, according to box office reports. The film placed third in North America in its opening weekend.

The production budget was reported at $82 million. In its second weekend, the film showed strong legs as word of mouth spread, holding its position among the top earners.

Critics have responded positively. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 96% critic score, making it the highest-rated starring vehicle of Pitt’s career and the best-reviewed film of Ayer’s career. The audience score stands at 96% based on more than 100 ratings.

The Hollywood Reporter called the film ‘a love story, and one of the most moving to come along in a long time,’ adding that ‘Pitt displays an engagement with his co-star that may be his most resonant yet.’ Variety wrote that the film features ‘a terrific performance — and Brad Pitt is extremely good too,’ crediting the dog Uber, who plays Odin, as a standout.

The Los Angeles Times offered a more measured take, saying that ‘a dog steals Heart of the Beast while Brad Pitt’s charm is kept on leash.’ The Guardian described the film as ‘a bit cheesy’ but concluded that ‘Pitt is the right guy in the right film.’

Production and Casting Details

Heart of the Beast reunites Pitt with director David Ayer for the first time since 2014’s Fury. The screenplay was written by Cameron Alexander, who also executive produces. Producers include Damien Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton through Wild Chickens Productions, Ayer through Crave Films, Marty Bowen through Temple Hill Entertainment, and Pitt through Plan B Entertainment.

J.K. Simmons joined the cast in February 2025, marking his third collaboration with Pitt after The Mexican and Burn After Reading, and his second with Ayer after Harsh Times.

Speaking to IndieWire on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Ayer said the shoot was more difficult than he anticipated. ‘It was a bigger challenge than I understood going into it,’ Ayer told IndieWire. He also explained that he opted to direct the movie after Alexander’s script provoked strong emotions.

Simmons described the project in a Paramount featurette. ‘This is a love story to me,’ said Simmons.

Heart of the Beast continues its theatrical run. No official Paramount+ or digital release date has been set.
