Brad Pitt’s survival thriller Heart of the Beast has given dog lovers a clear answer: Odin, the German Shepherd at the center of the film, does not die. The film, directed by David Ayer, opened in U.S. theaters on September 25, 2026.
The movie follows retired Special Forces officer James Belmont (Pitt) and his combat dog Odin after a plane crash strands them in the Alaskan wilderness. Odin is portrayed primarily by a dog named Uber, with three other German Shepherds also sharing the role.
Producer Richard Raymond addressed the question directly months before release. In a June 11 post on X, he wrote: ‘And look — everybody loves a dog. It is about the only thing the whole world agrees on. So let me put your mind at ease right now: the dog does not die. You are welcome.’
Odin’s Fate Confirmed Early
The film itself removes any suspense about Odin’s fate from the opening scene. A flash-forward shows Odin alive, standing on a road as a young woman (Anna Lambe) approaches in a pickup truck.
By the end, James Belmont dies from injuries sustained during a wolf attack. Odin stays beside him through the night and howls when he realizes James has died. James leaves a letter in Odin’s harness and tells him to ‘finish the mission.’ Odin then reaches the road alone and is rescued.
Odin is a fully developed character in the film. The dog has titanium teeth, a prosthetic leg, and suffers from PTSD, mirroring James’s own trauma from combat. Reviewers have highlighted the dog’s performance as a central strength of the movie.
The Los Angeles Times wrote that Odin ‘is a bionic dog, with titanium teeth and a prosthetic foot from injuries sustained during wartime, but nothing slows him down, not even a plane crash.’ The review added that ‘the star of the movie is indeed Odin and he’s a very, very good boy.’
Variety praised the canine actor, writing that Uber ‘does one of the most affecting pieces of canine acting I’ve seen since the days of Old Yeller and Lassie Come Home.’
Critical and Audience Reception
Heart of the Beast has received largely positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an 87% critic score and a 96% audience score. Metacritic shows a score of 69 based on 17 reviews. Audiences gave the film an A- CinemaScore.
The film earned $20 million domestically and $30.1 million from 63 international markets in its opening weekend, for a worldwide total of $50.1 million. Its reported budget was $82 million.
In its second weekend, the film showed staying power as word of mouth spread. Its domestic total reached over $27.4 million after its first week.
Heart of the Beast stars Brad Pitt, J.K. Simmons as Watkins, and Anna Lambe as Amber. It was directed by David Ayer from a screenplay by Cameron Alexander. The film was shot in New Zealand.
As of early October 2026, the film remains in theaters and continues to draw audiences with its man-and-dog survival story.
